Technote Details :: Working with MX Kollection 2 and MX Kollection 3 using different Configuration folders

Issue

If you upgrade to MX Kollection 3, you can still use MX Kollection 2 to continue work on web sites. There are two ways you can use both versions:

  • install them together, as described here.
  • installl them separately, as this technote will explain.

Reason

Some of you might consider using both MX Kollection 2 and MX Kollection 3 a bit confusing, because old and new server behaviors and commands can be accessed from the Dreamweaver interface. Fortunately, you can also have only one bundle installed at a time, and switch between the two versions. To avoid having to wait for the install / unistall process each time, you can use separate Configuration folders for each bundle.

Dreamweaver keeps all istalled extensions in a folder called Configuration, which is usually located in:

  • c:\Documents and Settings\XP_user\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX 2004\Configuration (for machines running Windows XP).
  • Macintosh HD:Users:MAC_User:Library:Application Support:Macromedia:Dreamweaver MX 2004:Configuration  (for machines running MAC OS).

This location may vary with to your current computer setup. Also, XP_user and MAC_User should be replaced with the appropriate user name in the above paths.

Note: On Windows systems, the Application data folder is marked as hidden, and not visible by default. To see hidden and system files and folders, check this option under Tools>Folder options in any explorer window.

Renaming or deleting the Configuration folder will simply remove all installed Dreamweaver extensions, without causing any damages to your Dreamweaver installation.

Note: We do not recommend this procedure. Read this technote about using MX Kollection 2 and 3 together.

Caution: Do not use this procedure unless you are sure of what you are doing and you are carefully following the steps described next.

Caution: By renaming the Configuration folder, all the installed extensions (from InterAKT or other extensions developers) will not be available. Also, you will need to switch back and forth between the two configuration folders when you need to use one of the extensions from the other folder.

Solution

Follow the next steps in order to obtain two working Dreamweaver configurations. You can then switch between the two Configuration folders, in order to use the version of MX Kollection bundle that you need:

  1. Rename the Configuration folder (lets' say to Configuration_v2 from:
    • c:\Documents and Settings\XP_user\Application Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver MX 2004\Configuration - if using Win XP
    • Macintosh HD:Users:MAC_User:Library:Application Support:Macromedia:Dreamweaver MX 2004:Configuration - if using MAC
  2. Install MX Kollection 3
  3. When you want to use Kollection 2, you will just rename the current Configuration folder (to Configuration__v3) and name the Configuration_v2 folder back to Configuration.
