Technote Details :: Access restriction issues

Issue

After applying the Restrict Access To Folder command on multiple files, I can no longer access them. The browser enters a loop, and no longer displays the login page, which is located in the same folder. Also, applying the command seems to overwrite existing settings.

  • Products: MX User Login.

  • Operating System: All.

  • Server Models: All.

  • Dreamweaver version: any.

Reason

The first issue happens because the Restrict Access to Folder server behavior is applied to the login page as well. When a user tries to access a protected page, it will be redirected to the login page, but since it is protected as well, the page enters a loop.

As for the second issue, it is the normal behavior of the command. What the command does for each file in the selected folder is:

  1. Check if the Restrict Access to Page server behavior already exists on the page. If found, it is removed.

  2. Applies the Restrict Access to Page server behavior with the new parameters.

Solution

In order to avoid the infinite loop caused when applying the Restrict Access to Folder on a folder that contains the login page, after applying the command open the login page and remove the server behavior. To do so, select it from the Server Behaviors tab and press the Minus (-) key.

In order to use the Restrict Access To Folder command for pages that allow more than one level, simply hold the CTRL (control) key when deciding the user levels in the dialog box.

To use the command for different user levels, simply separate the pages into different folders (one per different level), or apply the Restrict Access To Page directly on each file.
