Technote Details :: Upgrading your extensions if you use both Dreamweaver 8 and MX 2004

Issue

This technical note addresses the steps a user that has both Dreamweaver 8 and MX 2004 installed in order to install a InterAKT extension.

Reason

Starting with Dreamweaver 8, the Extension Manager uses a common cache for extensions. This allows installing an extension only once, for a Dreamweaver version, and then enabling it for the other.

This technote addresses four possible scenarios:

  1. You want to install an InterAKT extension for the first time.
  2. You want to disable an installed extension.
  3. You want to remove an installed extension.
  4. You want to upgrade an installed extension.

Solution

Scenario 1: Installing an extension for the first time

  1. Browse to the folder where you unpacked the extension's .mxp file.
  2. Double-click the .mxp file and follow the instructions on screen.

  3. The extension will be installed and enabled for Dreamweaver 8.

  4. To use the extension in Dreamweaver MX 2004, in the Extension manager select the appropriate version of Dreamweaver in the drop-down menu.

Switch between the installed Dreamweaver versions
  5. The extension you've just installed will appear in the list unchecked. This means it is disabled.

  6. To enable it, check it in the list. Then follow the instructions on screen.

Scenario 2: Disabling an installed extension

  2. Switch to the version of Dreamweaver you want to disable the extension.
  3. Uncheck it from the extension list.

Uncheck an extension to disable it
  4. The extension is now disabled for the selected Dreamweaver version.

Scenario 3: Completely remove an extension

  1. First make sure it is enabled in one version of Dreamweaver only. If not, disable it from one, as shown in scenario 2.
  2. With the Extension  Manager opened for the Dreamweaver version where the extension is enabled, click the remove button.

    Remove the extension from system
  3. If the extension is still enabled for both versions of Dreamweaver, an error message will be displayed:

A message warns that the extension is still used
  4. Follow the instructions on screen to finish removing the extension.

Scenario 4: Upgrade an installed extension

  1. First remove the old version of the extension, as explained in scenario 3.
  2. Install the newest version of the extension as explained in scenario 1.
